More Than a Workout: How a Consistent Yoga Practice Transforms All Five Layers of the Human Experience

Modern wellness culture tends to treat yoga as a flexibility routine, something you do for tight hamstrings or a calm Tuesday morning. But the yogic tradition itself wasn’t built around a single layer of the self. According to the Taittiriya Upanishad, a human being is made up of five interpenetrating sheaths, or koshas:

The physical body - Annamaya kosha

The energy body - Pranamaya kosha

The mind - Manomaya kosha

The intellect - Vijnanamaya kosha

The bliss body - Anandamaya kosha

What makes yoga distinct from other forms of exercise is that it was designed as a technology to work on all five layers simultaneously. Physical poses strengthen and tone the tissues, pranayama regulates the breath, meditation refines our thought, discernment, and inner stillness. Modern research is increasingly validating what this model always assumed: that physical, energetic, mental, cognitive, and emotional health are not separate systems to be optimized one at a time, but a single continuum, and that yoga's real power lies in addressing all of it at once.

The first layer:  the physical body

The evidence for the physical benefits is substantial - this is annamaya kosha - the food sheath. The body used skillfully becomes not just stronger, but a more efficient vehicle for everything happening in the subtler layers within it. Yoga provides a wide range of benefits by strengthening and toning the muscles while improving flexibility, balance, and posture. It supports bone health and helps maintain healthy, mobile joints, reducing stiffness and promoting greater ease of movement.

Yoga also supports the healthy functioning of the organs by encouraging deeper breathing, better digestion, and relaxation. At the same time, yoga engages and stimulates the brain, enhancing focus, coordination, body awareness, and stress regulation. Through mindful movement and controlled breathing, yoga also improves circulation, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients throughout the body and supporting overall physical well-being. 

The second layer:  the energy body

Pranamaya kosha, the energetic body, is where yoga's uniqueness as a system becomes most obvious, because almost no other form of exercise systematically trains the breath as its own discipline. Breathing practices measurably shifts the balance of the autonomic nervous system toward parasympathetic dominance (rest and digest). 

Slow, controlled breath appears to act on the vagus nerve which is the physiological pathway connecting breath, the brainstem (control center for basic, involuntary survival tasks like breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep), the limbic system (the part of our brain that manages emotions, memory, basic drives, and survival responses), and the prefrontal cortex (controls high-level thinking, complex choices, and self-control - this area lets you plan, focus, and manage your feelings). 

The prefrontal cortex and insula (the insula links physical body sensations with emotions - playing a major role in self-awareness, pain, and empathy) are areas of the brain involved in things like thinking, awareness, and regulating emotions, while the amygdala helps detect danger and trigger the body’s stress response. GABA is a chemical messenger in the brain that acts like a natural “brake,” helping to quiet excessive brain activity. Researchers suggest that some breathing practices may strengthen this calming effect on the amygdala, making it easier to reduce feelings of stress, fear, or anxiety. 

Simply stated, controlled breath gives us a simple, voluntary way to help tell our brain and body to slow down and relax. Where most exercise trains the muscles and leaves the nervous system to regulate itself, yoga treats the breath as a direct interface to it - the bridge between the physical body and the mind.

The third layer:  the mind

Manomaya kosha, the mind, with its stream of sensory input, emotion, and habitual reactivity is where the meditative and mindfulness components of yoga do their most visible work. Neuroimaging studies of yoga and meditation practitioners show altered activation in brain regions governing attentional control, conflict monitoring, and emotional processing, along with electrophysiological evidence that long-term practitioners process negative emotional stimuli with reduced reactivity compared to non-practitioners. 

Systematic reviews consistently report reductions in anxiety, depression, and general distress among yoga practitioners across diverse populations, from healthcare workers to trauma survivors, with the breathing and meditative elements specifically credited with calming and focusing the mind. This lines up with the traditional description of manomaya kosha as the layer prone to being pulled about by craving, aversion, and unexamined emotion. It's the layer where consistent practice seems to produce some of the most immediate, subjectively noticeable shifts.

The fourth layer:  the intellect 

Vijnanamaya kosha - the layer of discernment, insight, metacognition, and higher intelligence. In older adults with mild cognitive impairment, a 12-week yoga intervention produced improvements in neural connectivity and cognitive performance comparable to a standard memory enhancement training program. This is notable because this population is typically expected to decline, not improve. Researchers studying meditators have found that experienced practitioners show a higher degree of sustained attention than non-practitioners, suggesting that the discriminating, higher order intelligence the yogic tradition locates in vijnanamaya kosha may be trainable in the same way strength or flexibility is.

The fifth layer:  the bliss body

Anandamaya kosha, the innermost sheath of ease and contentment, is the hardest layer to measure by conventional scientific standards and also the one most yoga traditions consider the point of the whole practice. Still, there is real physiological evidence pointing in this direction. A randomized controlled study using MRI spectroscopy found that a 12-week yoga intervention produced greater increases in brain GABA levels than a metabolically matched walking program, the first study to demonstrate this yoga-mood-neurochemistry link with brain imaging rather than self-report alone. 

Follow-up research has extended this finding to people with major depression, showing that consistent practice is associated with sustained elevations in mood-related brain chemistry that persist for days after a session. This suggests that the state of ease and contentment yoga practitioners have reported for millennia has a measurable neurochemical signature, and that regular practice reliably moves people toward it. 

This is ultimately why yoga resists being reduced to a physical fitness modality. Yoga doesn’t separate the stretch from the breath, the breath from the mind, or the mind from the sense of wellbeing that comes from working on all of them together.
